Ladies and Gentlemen,
Honorable participants to this promotion event,
For those who do not know me, my name is Muhamet Hamiti. I head the Embassy of the Republic of Kosovo, which is situated here, a few hundred yeards from this hotel, just at the corner, at 15 Stratton Street.
I would like to make a few remarks at the beginning of this Kosovo Investment Promotion event here in Mayfair. Mr. Hasani, head of the Kosovo Investment Promotion Agency, and His Excellency, Mr. Ahmet Shala, the Minister for Economy and Finance in the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, will speak in greater details about what the new nation of Kosovo can offer in terms of investment opportunities.
I am proud to represent the Republic of Kosovo, which, 15 months after its declaration of independence, has got 58 recognitions from countries around the globe. 22 out of 27 EU countries have recognized Kosovo so far, 24 out of 28 NATO countries, 7 out of the G8 Group members. The GDP of the recognizing countries amounts to 70% of the GDP of the world.
Our transition to independence has been largely smooth. Independence has brought peace of mind to the people of Kosovo, stability to Kosovo, both internally and externally.
We have a functioning state, with functioning institutions, a functioning democracy, and people who are committed to furthering this nations prospects in all areas.
Only last week, Kosovo made an important leap towards becoming a full international actor in the world. We have been admitted to the IMF. The yes vote was resounding: 96 countries voted in favour. 10 voted against, and 32 countries recorded their abstentions. We hope we will soon become a member of the World Bank, but also of the EBRD.
We desire for and aspire to integration into the EU and NATO. Membership in the UN as well.
A lot of challenges remain ahead of us. We will need to kick off a fully-fledged economic development programme for our country. A lot has been done in the physical reconstruction of the war-torn Kosovo. Now is the time to work in a way which will unleash all our potentials: our natural and human resources in the first place.
Kosovo has a vibrant domestic business community. Our Government is creating the right context for this as well as the prospective international investors. The Parliament of Kosovo has passed the key pieces of legislation to provide for this context. To get the wheels of the economy rolling in their full steam, we need investors. That is why we are here: to share our information with you, to convince you of our vested interest, and our mutual benefits at the end of the day, in getting you to invest in Kosovo.
But, first and foremost, we are here, as representatives of a sovereign Government, to assure you that Kosovo is honest about its wish to attract investment, and help it in all ways possible, based on such pillars as trust and transparency.
Let me conclude here, and give the floor to Mr. Mustafë Hasani, who heads ther Kosovo Investment Promotion Agency.
